Defending our environment: Ransford on helping save the BC shoreline

I’ve always been a person who cares about defending the environment. I was born and raised in Ghana, where I completed my undergraduate degree in wildlife conservation. Following my undergrad, I enrolled in the University of British Columbia’s Master of Forestry program to expand my expertise in environmental protection. I worked as a forester before joining PwC Canada’s Assurance practice in August 2021.
I joined PwC Canada because I knew I’d be able to work on a diverse range of environmental projects here. Of all the great projects I’ve worked on so far, the one I’m most passionate about is the Clean Coast, Clean Waters Initiative Fund. I’m part of the PwC Canada engagement team that administers this program on behalf of the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. I review the projects submitted from a biological impact perspective and manage grant recipients. We select projects using criteria that were determined in consultation with the Ministry, shoreline clean-up specialists and Indigenous organizations. Making these decisions is a huge challenge, because every project is doing something important to save the environment!
This project is so meaningful to me personally because it’s making a difference in the lives of people and the environmental ecosystem we all share.
It’s the largest shoreline clean-up project in British Columbia’s history. To date, we’ve administered nearly $15 million to help clean up over 3,180 kilometres of shoreline, collect over 1.3 million kilograms of debris and remove 118 derelict vessels. This project has also created 1,400 new jobs and provided people with opportunities for training and certifications, which will last long after the project has ended.
I’m proud to be part of the PwC Canada community of solvers. I believe that to solve a problem, the first step is understanding it and identifying the resources you need to build a solution.

In the same spirit of teamwork and making connections, I’m also a proud member of the PwC Canada soccer team. In Ghana, I played at the university level and took part in the All-Africa University Games. I’m a very solid defender: I try not to allow anybody to score goals. And just as I defend on the field of play, I defend the environment in my work every day.
